WPIAL Announces 2023 Wrestling Team Championships Brackets

Pittsburgh, Pa. – The Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League (WPIAL) has announced its brackets for the WPIAL Wrestling Team Championships presented by Western Pennsylvania Laborers’ Union, with semifinal, championship, and third-place consolation matches set to be held on Saturday, February 4 at Chartiers-Houston High School and Peters Township High School.

Teams qualify for the postseason by finishing in the top three of their respective sections in each classification. Postseason competition begins on Monday, January 30 with two pigtail matches each in the 2A and 3A classifications.

In 3A, Butler (5-0), Canon-McMillan (5-0), Connellsville (4-0), Plum (5-0), and Waynesburg Central (5-0) won section championships outright, while Franklin Regional (4-1), Norwin (4-1), and Penn-Trafford (4-1) shared the Section III title.

Burgettstown (7-0), Burrell (6-0), Frazier (6-0), Highlands (6-0), and Quaker Valley (6-0) claimed section crowns in 2A, and in Section IV there was a three-way tie between Central Valley (5-1), Freedom Area (5-1), and Hopewell (5-1).

The top three teams in 3A and the top four teams in 2A will earn qualification into the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) Wrestling Team Championships, which are set to begin on Monday, February 6 and conclude on February 9-11 at the GIANT Center in Hershey.
