WPIAL Announces 2023 Boys’ Tennis Singles Championships Brackets

Pittsburgh, Pa. – The Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League (WPIAL) revealed its brackets for the WPIAL/UPMC Sports Medicine Boys’ Tennis Singles Championships on Monday afternoon, with a total of 31 student-athletes qualifying through section tournaments held from March 28-29.
Student-athletes competed in four different sections in the 3A classifications, and five different sections in the 2A classification. The top four finishers in the 3A sections earned qualification to the WPIAL Championships, while the top three in the 2A brackets earned qualification.
A total of 12 student-athletes return to the WPIAL Boys’ Tennis Singles Championships after qualifying in 2022, and four student-athletes will be making their third WPIAL Championships appearance.
In 3A, Gateway sophomore Adam Memije (Section I), Moon senior Anthony Lounder (Section II), Allderdice senior Deniz Finkel (Section III), and Bethel Park sophomore Devin Collier (Section IV) emerged as section champions. Memije and Collier both won in three sets, as Memije defeated classmate Zidaan Hassan (7-6(5), 0-6, 6-2) and Collier topped Upper St. Clair’s Ronan Gibbons (6-3, 4-6, 7-5). Lounder was a 6-2, 6-1 victor against North Allegheny’s Shaun Fernando, and Finkel won 6-0, 6-0 versus Fox Chapel’s Will Siegel.

The five section champions in 2A were Greater Latrobe senior Josh Havrilla (Section I), Chartiers Valley junior Brendon Hallisey (Section II), Aquinas Academy junior Jackson Gillespie (Section III), Sewickley Academy sophomore Severin Harmon (Section IV), and Winchester Thurston freshman Austin He (Section VI). Gillespie and He both won in straight sets, with Gillespie claiming a 6-0, 6-0 victory versus North Catholic’s Alex Garvey and He defeating Montour’s John Rohrkaste, 6-1, 6-0. The other three champions won in three sets, as Havrilla defeated Valley’s Nicholas Bussard (6-1, 1-6, 7-6(6)), Hallisey topped teammate Liam Pederson (6-2, 3-6, 6-3), and Harmon won over his teammate Jonathan Varghese (6-2, 4-6, 6-0).

The WPIAL/UPMC Sports Medicine Boys’ Tennis Singles Championships will be held on April 11-12. The first round through semifinals will be held at both Bethel Park High School and North Allegheny High School (3A only) on April 11, and all finals and consolation finals will be held at Bethel Park on April 12.
The top two finishers in 3A and top four finishers in 2A will qualify for the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) Boys’ Tennis Singles Championships, which will be held on May 27-28 at Hershey Racquet Club.
