Hempfield Area, Central Valley Capture 2023 WPIAL Competitive Spirit Titles

Pittsburgh, Pa. – The Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League (WPIAL) hosted the first championship event of the 2022-2023 winter season this past Saturday, with Hempfield Area High School welcoming 27 teams in for the WPIAL Competitive Spirit Championships.

The league crowned overall champions in the 2A classifications, as well as winners in the categories of 2A large varsity, 2A small varsity, 3A large varsity, 3A small varsity, and 3A co-ed varsity.

In 3A, Hempfield Area captured its third consecutive overall title and took home the large varsity crown, while overall runner-up Thomas Jefferson earned the small varsity trophy. Butler won the co-ed varsity championship and placed 10th overall in the classification.

Central Valley won its first competitive spirit title in school history, capturing overall and small varsity gold in 2A. Neshannock was the overall runner-up and earned the large varsity trophy.

A total of 16 schools qualified for the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) Competitive Spirit Championships following their performances. In 3A, Butler, Hempfield Area, and Thomas Jefferson were joined by eight other qualifiers: Baldwin, Mars, Mt. Lebanon, North Allegheny, North Hills, Penn-Trafford, Pine-Richland, and South Fayette. For 2A, Central Valley and Neshannock were joined by Elizabeth Forward, Hampton, and Hopewell.

The 11th annual PIAA Competitive Spirit Championships are to be held at the GIANT Center in Hershey, Pa. on January 27-28.
