WPIAL Boys’ Tennis Singles Championship Brackets Revealed

Pittsburgh, Pa. – The Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League (WPIAL) announced its Boys’ Tennis Singles Championship brackets on Friday afternoon, with a total of 32 student-athletes qualifying through section tournaments held from April 6-7.
Student-athletes competed in four different sections from both the 2A and 3A classifications, with the top four finishers from each bracket earning qualification to the WPIAL Championships. A total of 10 student-athletes return after advancing out of sectionals in 2021, and both reigning WPIAL boys’ tennis singles champions – South Fayette senior Jacob Patterson (3A) and North Catholic senior Nicolas Scheller (2A) – will look to defend their crowns.
The WPIAL 2A and 3A Singles Championships will be held on April 12-13. The first round through semifinals will be held at both North Allegheny High School and Bethel Park High School (3A only) on April 12, and all finals and consolation finals will be held at North Allegheny on April 13.

SECTION 1-3A [Results]
In an all-Franklin Regional matchup, senior Andrew Allen came back to defeat younger brother Aaron Allen in three sets (2-6, 6-4, 6-4) to claim the Section 1-3A title. Andrew Allen blanked Hempfield Area senior Justin Novotney in two sets (6-0, 6-0) to advance to the championship, while Aaron Allen won 6-0, 6-1 over Greater Latrobe junior Josh Havrilla in the semifinals. Havrilla captured bronze with a 2-6, 6-2, 6-0 comeback decision over Novotney in the third-place consolation match.
All four student-athletes will be making their WPIAL 3A Singles Championships debut.

SECTION 2-3A [Results]
North Allegheny sophomore Trey Davidson captured the Section 2-3A singles championship, defeating Moon junior Anthony Lounder by a 6-3, 6-1 scoreline. Davidson defeated Sewickley Academy freshman Severin Harmon to punch his finals ticket, while Lounder knocked off Davidson’s teammate Manas Kathir in two sets (7-5, 6-1) to play for the gold. Kathir defeated Harmon in the third-place consolation match, winning 7-6, 7-3.
Davidson, Kathir, and Harmon will all make their first appearance at the WPIAL 3A Singles Championships. Lounder qualified for the 2021 edition after finishing runner-up in the Section 2-3A tournament, posting an 0-1 record following an opening-round defeat.

SECTION 3-3A [Results]
Central Catholic senior Kyle Broadhurst won the Section 3-3A title in comeback fashion, knocking off Shady Side Academy junior David Mnunskin in three frames (2-6, 6-4, 6-1). Broadhurst made the final following a 3-6, 6-3, 6-0 win against Shady Side Academy senior Sam Bitzer, while Mnunskin reached the gold medal match with a 6-2, 6-0 triumph over Baldwin junior Braden Yokopenic.
All four student-athletes will be making their WPIAL 3A Singles Championships debut.

SECTION 4-3A [Results]
South Fayette senior Jacob Patterson completed a career sweep of Section 4-3A titles, winning his third in a 6-0, 6-0 blanking of Mt. Lebanon senior Philip Gorun. Patterson was 44-1 in sets across the bracket, and advanced to the championship match with a 6-0, 6-0 shutout of Upper St. Clair senior Dev Patel. Gorun made his second consecutive Section 4-3A final after picking up a 10-2 win over Upper St. Clair sophomore Ronan Gibbons in the semifinals. Gibbons topped his teammate Patel in the third-place consolation match in three sets (5-7, 6-1, 6-0).
Patterson is the reigning WPIAL 3A singles champion and placed fourth as a freshman in 2019, while Gorun finished fourth last season and went 1-1 as a freshman. Both Gibbons and Patel will make their first appearance in the WPIAL 3A Singles Championships.

SECTION 1-2A [Results]
Thomas Jefferson senior Drew Dimidjian successfully defended his Section 1-2A championship, earning the gold with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over South Park senior Tim Lakotos. Dimidjian, who finished as the Section 1-2A runner-up in 2019, topped South Park senior Alex Duing in a marathon semifinal (3-6, 7-6(3), 6-2), while Lakatos reached the championship match with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Ringgold senior Bryan Nguyen. Duing claimed bronze with a 7-5, 6-1 triumph over Nguyen.
Dimidjian is the only student-athlete from the four qualifiers who has participated in the WPIAL 2A Singles Championships, finishing third last season after an 0-1 performance in 2019.

SECTION 2-2A [Results]
The Section 2-2A final featured a pair of Planets, but it was Mars junior Josh Dunham who would get the best of his teammate Luke Raymundo with a 6-0, 6-4 win. Dunham reached the final with a 6-1, 6-1 decision against Beaver junior Andrew Cavett, while Raymundo defeated reigning Section 2-2A champion Christian Kosinski of Central Valley by a 6-1, 6-3 scoreline. Cavett knocked off Kosinski in three sets (6-4, 5-7, 6-0) to capture the third-place consolation match.
The Mars duo will both make their WPIAL 2A Singles Championships debut, while Kosinski and Cavett fell in the first round of last year’s edition.

SECTION 3-2A [Results]
North Catholic senior Nicolas Scheller captured his second consecutive Section 3-2A championship with a 6-0, 6-1 triumph over teammate Brody Golla. Scheller used a 6-1, 6-0 win over Aquinas Academy sophomore Jackson Gillespie to make the final, while Golla defeated Valley senior Nicholas Bussard in straight sets (6-1, 6-2) to set up a showdown of the Trojans. Gillespie knocked off Bussard in the third-place consolation match, 6-1, 6-0.
Scheller enters as the reigning WPIAL 2A singles champion, while Bussard and Gillespie both qualified for the 2021 tournament. This will be Golla’s first appearance at the WPIAL 2A Singles Championships.

SECTION 4-2A [Results]
Quaker Valley senior Mike Sirianni was one of three student-athletes to defend their section title, as he won his second Section 4-2A crown with a 6-4, 6-4 triumph over twin brother Will Sirianni. The 2019 Section 2-2A runner-up, Mike Sirianni won his semifinal match by a 6-1, 6-1 scoreline over Hampton senior Ethen Oh, while Will Sirianni defeated Montour freshman John Rohrkaste in straight sets (7-5, 6-2). Rohrkaste brought home bronze with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Oh in the third-place consolation match.
Mike Sirianni was the WPIAL 2A runner-up last season and went 1-1 in the 2019 edition, while Will Sirianni placed fourth in 2021. This will be the first WPIAL 2A Singles Championships appearance for Rohrkaste and Oh.
