WPIAL Announces 2023 Track & Field Team Championships Brackets

Pittsburgh, Pa. – The Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League (WPIAL) has released its brackets for the WPIAL/UPMC Sports Medicine Boys’ & Girls’ Track & Field Team Championships, with championship meets set to be held on Tuesday, May 9 at Peters Township High School (2A) and West Mifflin High School (3A).
Teams qualify for the postseason by finishing in the top two of their respective sections. Each classification has four semifinal meets held on Tuesday, May 2, with the winning team qualifying for the championship meet.
In 3A boys’ track & field, Blackhawk (5-0), Central Catholic (6-0), Kiski Area (6-0), Mt. Lebanon (5-0), Norwin (5-0), and South Fayette (6-0) were undefeated section champions. There were three-way ties in Section II between Connellsville, Belle Vernon, and Elizabeth Forward at 5-1, and in Section III with Butler, North Allegheny, and Seneca Valley at 5-1.
For 3A girls’ track & field, all eight section champions were undefeated with Avonworth (5-0), Franklin Regional (6-0), Kiski Area (5-0), Mt. Lebanon (5-0), North Allegheny (6-0), Norwin (5-0), Ringgold (6-0), and South Fayette (6-0) claiming plaques.
Each 2A boys’ track & field champion was undefeated, as Apollo-Ridge (7-0), Greensburg Central Catholic (7-0), Hopewell (7-0), Quaker Valley (8-0), Shenango (7-0), South Park (7-0), Waynesburg Central (7-0), and West Mifflin (7-0) topping their groups.
In 2A girls’ track & field, seven of the eight sections had an undefeated champion with Derry (7-0), Hopewell (7-0), Knoch (6-0), Quaker Valley (8-0), Shenango (7-0), South Park (7-0), and Winchester Thurston (8-0). There was a three-way tie in Section VI between Brownsville, California, and Waynesburg Central at 6-1.
Blackhawk and Elizabeth Forward opted out of the WPIAL Boys’ Track & Field Team Championships, and Avonworth opted out of the WPIAL Girls’ Track & Field Team Championships.
