WPIAL Announces 2022 Football Championships Brackets

Pittsburgh, Pa. – The Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League (WPIAL) has announced its WPIAL Football Championships brackets this past Saturday, with championship games in the 5A and 6A classifications set to be held at Norwin High School on Saturday, November 19, and championship games in the 1A, 2A, 3A, and 4A classifications set to be held at Acrisure Stadium on Friday, November 25.

A total of 67 teams qualified across the six classifications. Four teams earned postseason berths in 6A, eight in 5A, 13 in 4A, 12 in 3A, 14 in 2A, and 16 in 1A. All brackets begin play on Friday, November 4, except for 6A, which will begin on Friday, November 11.

North Allegheny (9-1, 4-0) claimed the Tri-County Five Conference title in 6A. In 5A, Bethel Park (9-1, 5-0) is the Allegheny Six Conference champion, Franklin Regional (6-3, 4-1) earned the Big East Conference crown, and Pine-Richland (7-3, 4-1) captured the Northeast Conference title.

There was a three-way tie in the Big Seven Conference with McKeesport (9-1, 5-1), Laurel Highlands (7-2, 5-1), and Thomas Jefferson (7-3, 5-1) all sharing the 4A section crown. Armstrong (9-1, 6-0) won the Greater Allegheny Conference, and Aliquippa (9-0, 7-0) collected the Parkway Conference crown.

In 3A, Freeport (9-1, 5-0) earned the Allegheny 6 Conference championship, Belle Vernon (7-2, 5-0) took home the Interstate Conference title, and Avonworth (9-1, 6-0) is the winner in the Western Hills Conference.

Steel Valley (9-0, 7-0) is the lone undefeated team in 2A and won the Allegheny Conference. Sto-Rox (7-2, 6-0) collected the Century Conference title, and Beaver Falls (9-1, 7-0) earned the championship in the Midwestern Conference.

In 1A, Laurel (8-1, 6-0) collected the Big 7 Conference crown, Bishop Canevin (9-1, 7-0) won the Black Hills Conference, Greensburg Central Catholic (8-2, 6-0) captured the Eastern Conference title, and Mapletown (10-0, 7-0) earned the Tri-County South Conference championship.

The champion in each classification will earn qualification into the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) Football Championships. The 5A and 6A champions will enter in the quarterfinal round on November 25-26, while the 1A, 2A, 3A, and 4A champions enter in the semifinal round on December 2-3. All championship games will be held at Cumberland Valley High School from December 8-10.
