WPIAL 3A Boys’ Golf Individual Semifinals Field Set

Pittsburgh, Pa. – A total of 72 boys’ golf student-athletes qualified for the Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League (WPIAL) 3A Individual Semifinals, which are set to be held Monday, Sept. 27 at Willowbrook Golf Course. Student-athletes punched their tickets through eight different sectional qualifiers, each with their own target score needed to advance.
Tee times for the WPIAL 3A Boys’ Golf Individual Semifinals will be set on Friday afternoon.

SECTION 1-AAA
Indiana’s Harrison Martineau claimed medalist honors at the Section 1-AAA Qualifier, firing a 69 (-2) to best Penn Trafford’s Nick Turowski by one stroke. Held at Indiana Country Club, a total of six golfers met the target score of 80, as Martineau and Turowski were joined by Indiana’s Trevor Todd, Greater Latrobe’s Owen Meile, Hempfield Area’s Austin Corona, and Penn Trafford’s Chase Crissman.
Turowski was attempting to repeat as WPIAL Section 1-AAA champion, having won the event last year over older brother Alex. He is the only holdover out of the six qualifiers, with the other five set to make their WPIAL 3A Individual Semifinal debut.

SECTION 2-AAA
Logan Voytish of Uniontown captured the Section 2-AAA Qualifier medalist honor, turning in a 70 (-1) to top the field by four strokes. Hosted by Cedarbrook Golf Course, six golfers hit the target score of 80, with Voytish accompanied by Albert Gallatin’s Matt Karpeal, Connellsville’s Ethan Rice, and a Belle Vernon trio of Tyler Mocello, Patrick Bush, and Rogan Maloney.
Voytish is one of four qualifiers who will be returning to the WPIAL Championship round, alongside Bush, Karpeal, and Mocello. Bush won the 2019 Section 2-AAA individual crown and qualified in 2020, while Karpeal captured the medalist honor in 2020. Mocello will make his third WPIAL Championship appearance after advancing out of sectional play the previous two seasons.

SECTION 3-AAA
Shaler’s Joey Miller fired an even-par 71 to take home the medalist honor at the Section 3-AAA Qualifier, outpacing the field by five strokes. A total of 10 golfers qualified by meeting the target score of 81 at Shannonpin Country Club, as Miller was joined by four student-athletes from Seneca Valley (Joel Goodzinski, Lucas Bruns, Luke Robertson, Nolan Nicklas), two from Mars (Blake Bertolo, Ryan Steigerwald), two from Butler (Colin Patterson, Wyatt Kos), and North Allegheny’s Chris Hoffman.
Four Section 3-AAA golfers will be returning to the WPIAL Championships in Bertolo, Miller, Nicklas, and Steigerwald. Both the 2020 Section 3-AAA individual champion Bertolo and Nicklas will be making their third appearances, while this is the second time qualifying for Miller and Steigerwald.

SECTION 4-AAA
Rocco Salvitti of Central Catholic won medalist honors at the Section 4-AAA Qualifier, as his 70 (-2) topped Franklin Regional’s Zac Abdallah by a single stroke. Held at Murrysville Golf Course, eight golfers met the target score of 79, with Salvitti and Abdallah joined by a Central Catholic duo (Carter Pitcairn, Aidan Burchianti), a pair from Franklin Regional (Nolan Shilling, Jeff Anderchak), and two from Plum (Tim Pease, Wes Lorish).
Three Section 4-AAA golfers will compete in their third WPIAL Individual Championships (Anderchak, Pitcairn, Salvitti), and a fourth will be competing in his second (Abdallah). Salvitti improved one spot from his performance at the 2020 WPIAL Section 4-AAA Qualifier, as he finished a stroke off of the medalist position a year ago.

SECTION 5-AAA
Moon’s Zack Ross carded a 73 (+1) to capture the Section 5-AAA Qualifier medalist honor, making him one of four golfers to move onto next week’s WPIAL 3A Individual Semifinals. Held at Moon Golf Club, Ross will be accompanied by teammates Anthony Treonze and Hunter Wilson, as well as West Allegheny’s Anthony Pass – all of which met the target score of 80.
Pass is the only golfer of the Section 5-AAA quartet who has previously qualified for the WPIAL Individual Championships, doing so in 2019 and 2020.

SECTION 6-AAA
Josh Shellenberger led a Mt. Lebanon three-way battle for the Section 6-AAA Qualifier crown, posting a 76 (+4) to top teammates Callan Wilcox and Zach Dyke by one stroke. A total of seven golfers met the target score of 80 at Butler’s Golf Course, with the aforementioned trio joined by teammate Hollis Whalen, Bethel Park duo Jonathan Haddox and Dom Nerone, and Baldwin’s Dominic Trimbur.
Shellenberger and Wilcox are the only returnees from the Section 6-AAA group, having both qualified for last year’s WPIAL Individual Championships. Wilcox won Section 6-AAA medalist honor in that season, finishing two strokes ahead of runner-up Shellenberger.

SECTION 7-AAA
A total of 18 golfers met the target score of 82 at the Section 7-AAA Qualifier, but South Fayette’s Jaden Mizenko topped them all with a 73 (+1) to take home medalist honors. Held at Lindenwood Golf Course, the 18-qualifier field featured six student-athletes from Peters Township (Ben Miller, Nick Haught, Austin Malley, Colton Lusk, Nick Wetzel, Kyle McClintock), four from South Fayette (Mizenko, James Cavrak, Timmy Eisnor, Trent D’Alessandro), four from Upper St. Clair (Connor McKenzie, P.J. Tanner, Neil Joon, Johnny McShane), three from Canon-McMillan (Anthony West, Ethan Weismantle, George Collins), and one each from Chartiers Valley (Derek Armfield) and Trinity (Colton Deems).
Only two of the 18 qualifiers have played in previous WPIAL Individual Championships. Cavrak has made it in all four of his varsity seasons, doing so in 2018, 2019, and 2020. Wetzel also made the 2020 edition.

SECTION 8-AAA
Led by Fox Chapel’s Davey Fuhrer, a group of 12 golfers met the target score of 83 at the Section 8-AAA Qualifier to move onto the WPIAL 3A Individual Semifinals. Held at Willowbrook Country Club, Fuhrer brought home medalist honors with a 76 (+4), a stroke ahead of three tied for second place in teammate Zach Paper and Shady Side Academy’s Ryan Frolich and Wes Warden. That quartet was joined by four more student-athletes from Fox Chapel (John Walsh, Max Johnson, Eli Yofan, Owen Delaney), Hampton’s Dan Venture and Matt Erka, Kiski Area’s Cambell Curry, and Knoch’s Cory Voltz.
Four Section 8-AAA golfers will be returning to the WPIAL Individual Championships in Delaney, Paper, Warden, and Yofan. The quartet all appeared in the 2020 edition, while Warden will be making his third appearance after qualifying in 2019.
