Reigning Champions Lead After First Round of WPIAL Girls’ Golf Individual Championships

Pittsburgh, Pa. – The Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League (WPIAL) held the first round of the Girls’ Golf Individual Championships in the 2A and 3A classifications on Monday at Youghiogheny Country Club, with 43 student-athletes moving onto the final round on Tuesday, Oct. 4.

Entering the clubhouse with leads are the same two who left the clubhouse with gold last fall in South Fayette senior Marissa Malosh and Quaker Valley senior Eva Bulger. Malosh, the reigning 3A champion, fired a 75 (+3) to carry a two-stroke edge into next Tuesday’s deciding round. Bulger, who in 2A is looking to become the second four-time champion in WPIAL history, paces the field by four strokes after registering a score of 80 (+8).

Malosh’s round featured 11 pars and two birdies. Trailing her by fewer than 10 strokes are Seneca Valley junior Lihini Ranaweera (77, +5), North Allegheny senior Katie Rose Rankin (78, +6), Peters Township freshman Ellie Benson (80, +8), Elizabeth Forward freshman Mya Morgan (82, +10), and Penn Hills senior Lucy Brayton (83, +11). The remainder of the top 10 consists of North Allegheny senior Lauren Kardos (85, +13), Peters Township sophomore Sophia Severns (85, +13), Seneca Valley junior Madison Sharek (86, +14), and Oakland Catholic junior Paige Meyers (86, +14).

Bulger netted seven pars and three birdies to take the lead. Behind her by fewer than 10 strokes are Geibel Catholic senior Claire Konieczny (84, +12), Greensburg Central Catholic junior Izabela Aigner (85, +13), Shady Side Academy senior Neely Nicholson (87, +15), Freeport junior Lillie Snow (87, +15), and Eden Christian Academy freshman Pearl Lundgren (88, +16), Bethlehem-Center senior Gianna Petersen (93, +21), Shady Side Academy senior Delaney Mulderig (100, +28), Waynesburg Central sophomore Avery Davis (100, +28), and Deer Lakes senior Anna Yourish (102, +30) make up the remainder of the top 10.

The WPIAL Girls’ Golf Individual Championships are now played in a two-round format. The scores accumulated from the first round will carry over to their respective championships. Tee times and pairings for the final round of the WPIAL Girls’ Golf Individual Championships at Valley Brook Country Club will be released on Friday.
