Patterson, Scheller Defend WPIAL Boys’ Tennis Singles Titles

Wexford, Pa. – The Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League (WPIAL) began its 2021-2022 spring championship season with the Boys’ Tennis Singles Championships on April 12-13. Jacob Patterson of South Fayette defended the 3A title, and Nicolas Scheller of North Catholic repeated as champion in 2A.

The first round through semifinals were held on April 12 at North Allegheny High School (2A) and Bethel Park High School (3A), and the championship and consolation final matches were hosted indoors at Pure Athletex Sportsplex in Wexford due to the weather forecast.

Patterson and Scheller are the 18th and 19th student-athletes to win multiple WPIAL boys’ tennis singles titles, and this marks the first time that both classifications had a repeat winner since the sport added a second classification in 1999. Scheller is the second North Catholic boys’ tennis student-athlete to claim WPIAL gold, joining fellow two-time champion Tim Donovan (1984, 1985), and Patterson remains the first champion in South Fayette history.

CLASS 3A RECAP
South Fayette senior Jacob Patterson dropped a total of three points across the WPIAL 3A bracket, finishing off his run with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over North Allegheny sophomore Trey Davidson to secure his second straight gold medal. Patterson opened with a 10-0 blanking of Hempfield Area senior Justin Novotney in the first round, then defeated Moon junior Anthony Lounder, 10-1, in the quarterfinals. The senior closed his Tuesday trip with a 6-0, 6-1 triumph over Central Catholic senior Kyle Broadhurst to reach Wednesday’s final.

Davidson started his debut WPIAL trek with a 10-0 shutout of Baldwin junior Braden Yokopenic, followed by a 10-2 win over Mt. Lebanon senior Philip Gorun and a three-set marathon win (6-1, 4-6, 6-4) against Franklin Regional senior Andrew Allen. Broadhurst collected bronze in the third-place consolation match, outlasting Allen in three sets (2-6, 7-5, 6-2).

Patterson previously defeated Shady Side Academy’s Colin Gramley by a 7-5, 6-3 scoreline in last year’s final. The South Fayette senior finishes 10-2 all-time in WPIAL 3A Singles Championship play, finishing fourth as a freshman in 2019.

CLASS 2A RECAP
North Catholic senior Nicolas Scheller completed a successful defense of his WPIAL 2A singles title, capturing the gold medal with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Quaker Valley senior Mike Sirianni. Scheller started his tournament with a 10-0 shutout of Ringgold senior Bryan Nguyen, and topped Montour freshman John Rohrkaste, 10-1, in his quarterfinal match. The senior punched his ticket to the championship with a 6-2, 6-1 semifinal victory over Mars junior Josh Dunham.

Sirianni also began his bracket climb with a 10-0 win, defeating Central Valley senior Christian Kosinski. The Quaker Valley senior then knocked off Scheller’s teammate Brody Golla in the quarterfinals, 10-1, and defeated Thomas Jefferson senior Drew Dimidjian in the semifinals in straight sets (7-5, 6-0). Dunham secured the final PIAA qualifier spot in the third-place consolation match, winning 6-0, 6-0 over Dimidjian.

The Scheller-Sirianni showdown also took place in last year’s championship match, a 6-1, 6-1 decision in favor of Scheller. He finishes a perfect 8-0 in WPIAL 2A Singles Championship play.
