Hempfield Area Defends WPIAL Rifle Team Championship

Pittsburgh, Pa. – For the second straight year and fourth time in five seasons, Hempfield Area is the Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League (WPIAL) rifle team champion as it edged Butler, 800.64-800.59, on Tuesday afternoon in the WPIAL Rifle Team Championships at Dormont-Mt. Lebanon Sportsmen’s Club.
The championship is Hempfield Area’s sixth as a program, previously collecting them in 2010, 2013, 2018, 2019, and 2021. The Spartans are now one of six teams to win six or more WPIAL rifle team titles, joining Munhall (23), Trinity (18), Mt. Lebanon (7), Bethel Park (6), and Woodland Hills (6).
Hempfield Area’s 10 competitors all posted scores of 100, with Amanda Hardman’s 100.10 leading the way. The top eight scores factored into the team’s tally, as Hardman was joined by Lydia Dunn (100.09), Tyler Heatley (100.09), Alexia McCabe (100.09), Seth Maloney (100.08), Logan McKivens (100.07), Paige Roberts (100.06), Matt Steiner (100.06), and Claire Martz (100.06).

Butler, who entered as the Section 4 champions, collected silver with a team score of 800.59, while Trinity took home bronze after posting a tally of 797.53. Bethel Park (796.57), Mt. Lebanon (796.52), Upper St. Clair (796.48), Waynesburg Central (795.46), Armstrong (793.53), and McGuffey (793.47) rounded out the nine-team field.
Hardman was one of three to score an event-high 100.10, as she was matched by Upper St. Clair’s Jack Loomis and Armstrong’s Caleb Osborne. An All-Tournament Team made up of 15 student-athletes was announced following the competition.

The WPIAL Rifle Individual Championships will be held on Thursday, Feb. 10 at Dormont-Mt. Lebanon Sportsmen’s Club, and are set for an 11:00 a.m. start.
